Honda: A History of Innovation

Honda, a brand most commonly known for dependability and innovation in automotive engineering, actually has its roots in the motorcycle industry. Its long history stretches back to 1946, and it has gone from humble beginnings to a global company. The Honda story begins with Soichiro Honda, an engineer who recognized an opportunity to help Japan's recovery efforts after World War II by offering economical and efficient transportation.

In 1946, Soichiro Honda established the Honda Technical Research Institute in Hamamatsu, Japan. The company first focused on building compact, efficient engines to power bicycles, which were a feasible solution for Japan’s transportation demands. As a result, the A-type motorized bicycle was born in 1947. A year later, on September 24, 1948, Soichiro Honda and his business partner Takeo Fujisawa officially founded the Honda Motor Company. It only took them a few more months to introduce Honda’s first mass-produced motorcycle, the D-Type. The D-Type was a huge success, paving the way for Honda's future expansion in the motorcycle business.

Expansion and innovation continued through the 1950s and 1960s as Honda increased its product offerings and entered new markets, including the American market in 1959. Ten years later, the brand sold its first car in America, the Honda N600. With its feet planted firmly on the ground, Honda didn’t stop there, continuing to develop new technology, including the CVCC (Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion) engine in 1972. This development was significant as it allowed Honda to meet the new emissions standards of the Clean Air Act without using a catalytic converter or unleaded fuel. The 1974 Honda Civic was the first vehicle Honda offered with this engine.

Two years later, Honda debuted the Accord in 1976, giving the brand its first larger vehicle. The Accord's dependability, fuel efficiency, and innovative features cemented Honda's place in the fiercely competitive automotive market. Both the Accord and Civic continue to be great choices for commuters, younger drivers, and individual drivers around Mountlake Terrace who enjoy comfort and efficiency.

During the 1990s and 2000s, Honda expanded its product line again, releasing the Odyssey minivan, the CR-V compact SUV, and the Insight, the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle in the United States. While the Insight is no longer part of the lineup, both the Odyssey and CR-V continue to be standout options, providing families and those who want flexible cargo space with reliable and comfortable options for quick trips or simply to pile the kids in and head to Ballinger Park. As the 21st century rolled in, Honda celebrated the completion of its ten-millionth car built in the United States.

Throughout its history, Honda has been laser-focused on developing groundbreaking technologies, as seen when it introduced the Insight. In 1997, Honda released the EV Plus, the first production electric vehicle that didn't use lead acid batteries, although only small numbers were built before the focus turned to hybrids. The Honda FCX Clarity, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, was another environmentally friendly option that it provided in 2009. The Clarity was the first sedan in the world to offer this capability.

Today, Honda continues to push boundaries, investing in developments associated with self-driving technologies and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to improve vehicle safety and convenience, along with hybrid and electric vehicle options. In addition, the brand has stayed true to the vehicles that helped to secure its position in the American automotive industry, including the Accord, Civic, CR-V, and Odyssey.
