With its abundance of helpful technologies and smooth, compliant ride quality, the CR-V is a jack of all trades.

Ever since the CR-V was introduced to the Honda lineup in 1997, it has been a true crowd-pleaser with its abundance of interior space. It is also known for being an economical choice, a reputation that has been enhanced in recent years with the addition of a hybrid powertrain option. The hybrid used to be marketed separately, but for the latest generation, the hybrid powertrain has been integrated into the lineup as a standard feature on the higher trims.

Three Decades of the Honda CR-V

Honda started selling the CR-V back in 1995, but the CR-V did not make its way onto the American market until the 1997 model year. Back then, the CR-V was something of an odd duck, with the acronym itself standing for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle." Compact crossovers weren’t exactly common back in the mid-1990s, but once the CR-V came out, buyers found themselves drawn to it. Built on the popular Honda Civic platform, the first-generation CR-V featured a fully flat interior floor and independent suspension. The tailgate swung open toward the right, which might have felt a bit strange for American drivers since this meant it opened toward the curb.

While front-wheel drive came standard, real-time all-wheel drive was available. It might not have had low-range gearing, but the CR-V’s 8.1 inches of ground clearance gave it some moderate off-roading capabilities. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine originally provided 126 hp but was bumped up to 147 hp in 2000. A four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission could be equipped, providing good responsiveness for the day.

The 2002 lineup showcased multiple changes for the second-generation CR-V. It received a larger 2.4L four-cylinder engine that produced 160 hp and featured large triangular headlights. Honda also introduced multi-way folding rear seats for extra versatility when loading up on cargo. The load floor was completely flat, and a picnic table––which was introduced for the first generation––was still included. Up front, a flip-down center console created extra space between the seats. In 2005, there was a mid-cycle refresh that included some minor styling updates and the addition of standard safety equipment like anti-lock brakes.

The third generation of the CR-V spanned from 2007 to 2011. Noticeably absent from the exterior is the spare tire, which was mounted on the rear door in the first two generations but now found itself stashed under the load floor. The body has a more rounded style, setting it apart from the previous boxy designs. The stick shift was axed from the lineup, leaving just a five-speed automatic transmission paired with an updated version of the same 2.4L I-4 engine from the previous generation.

Produced from 2012 to 2016, the fourth-generation CR-V saw a power upgrade, with the 2.4L now producing 185 hp. Climate controls remained user-friendly, and there were two screens up front for infotainment and vehicle information. The refreshed 2015 model made the nose more pointed, with sharper headlights flowing into the grille. The frontal crash structure was also enhanced for safety purposes, and a CVT replaced the old five-speed automatic transmission, making for a slightly smoother and more efficient ride.

The 2017 model year ushered in the fifth-generation CR-V. The new 1.5L engine was turbocharged (thereby enhancing fuel economy), the body was enlarged, and more driver-assist features were added, such as adaptive cruise control. The cabin became even more refined, giving its occupants numerous well-crafted small item storage areas. During this time, Honda also unveiled the CR-V Hybrid with a 2.0L gas engine paired with electric motors to give buyers an even more fuel-efficient option.

Shop for a CPO Honda CR-V

Why shop for a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Honda CR-V? Well, why not? Here at Klein Honda, we have numerous CPO vehicles in our inventory and are proud to bring them to you. Shopping for a CPO vehicle has a lot of benefits, especially since these are low-mileage, late-model vehicles with clean histories. Any car that does not meet Honda’s strict terms cannot be sold under the CPO label.

Klein Honda is all about being transparent when it comes to the vehicle you are looking to buy. Honda’s guidelines for what constitutes a CPO vehicle are quite lofty, and any HondaTrue Certified model must pass a rigorous 182-point inspection to qualify for the CPO label. Any Honda that passes this test is in great working condition, which can give you a lot of peace of mind. Also, these vehicles are less than six years old and have fewer than 80,000 miles on them. For even greater peace of mind, look for a HondaTrue Certified+ model. These are in even better condition than your standard CPO vehicle, as they can be no more than one year old and have fewer than 12,000 miles on them.

Each CPO Honda CR-V will come with its own 182-point checklist, showing you everything the vehicle nailed on its examination. Features that do not exist in the model will, of course, not be tested, but you can see everything that has passed inspection. This gives you extra peace of mind when you finalize your purchase and drive off in your CR-V. Because CPO models are only a few years old, they also have all the modern features you could possibly want. That includes abundant infotainment and driver-assist technologies, as well as plenty of comfort and convenience features.

So, what’s the catch? Well, there really isn’t one. You can shave thousands of dollars off the price of a brand-new CR-V while getting a vehicle that is in like-new condition. Plus, you get our stellar never-ending lifetime warranty to keep you covered. If you aren’t pleased with your purchase, you have three days to exchange it for another model. That is Klein Honda’s way of saying, "Thank you for deciding to join our family of Honda owners!"
