2023 Honda Civic

A silver 2023 Honda Civic Touring is angled left.

Since its debut in 1972, the Civic has earned Honda acclaim. The initial models wowed drivers with their affordability and fuel efficiency. That tradition continues to this day, with each Civic model putting up solid mileage numbers at a reasonable price tag. As the Civic developed, though, it started to become sleeker and sportier, earning kudos for its exterior design and enjoyable performance. Honda has made certain that drivers do not feel they are sacrificing looks and comfort to protect the environment; the manufacturer believes you can have both a climate-friendly ride and one that awes other drivers and your passengers.

There’s no reason to believe this acclaim will wane anytime soon, either. The modern Civic offers attractive styling, competitive performance, comfortable seating, and ever-improving fuel efficiency. The 2023 Honda Civic continues the model’s tradition of excellence, keeping everything that has worked so well over the years while adding a few exciting new touches. We suspect that the Civic will remain an important part of the Honda lineup for many years to come. A look at the 2023 Honda Civic’s specs and features will show why drivers visit us whenever a new model hits the lot.

Performance

Enjoyable Acceleration

If you’re worried that a sedan hailed as being environmentally friendly might not be a high performer, then you need not fret. The 2023 Honda Civic has stellar performance. This is thanks to its two available engines: a standard 2.0L that offers 158 hp and a turbocharged 1.5L that provides 180 hp. The higher horsepower means the car never feels sluggish driving on the interstate. These engines also adapt when your Civic is idling, making certain fuel is saved so you’re not churning through gas when you don’t need to be.

You can also get up to 177 lb-ft of torque in your new Civic. Why does this matter? Well, the higher the torque rating, the easier and smoother acceleration will be. This comes in handy when you’re trying to merge onto the highway on a short on-ramp. Merging on short notice can be incredibly stressful, especially when a highway entrance is poorly designed. A solid torque rating makes certain your drives go easier no matter where you are. One of the benefits of a sedan is how it can take off quickly and adapt to changing driving circumstances with ease: the Civic fulfills that role with aplomb.

Efficiency

Incredible Economy

One of the main reasons the Civic caught on back in the 1970s was the incredible fuel efficiency it could brag of. The 1970s saw gas prices that fluctuated wildly (sound familiar?), so consumers wanted a sedan that they could count on. No one wanted to be emptying their wallets when they hit up the pump. We think the same goes for most consumers today as we continue to deal with gas prices that are often a bit too high for comfort.

While the 2023 Honda Civic can’t lower gas prices, it can certainly guarantee that you won’t need to fill up so often, thanks to its EPA-estimated ratings of up to 36 MPG combined with the available 1.5L turbocharged engine.[b] This combined rating breaks down into 33 MPG in the city and 42 MPG on the highway.[b] Why the difference? Highway travel requires far less braking, so less gas needs to be consumed to restart acceleration unless you end up in bumper-to-bumper traffic. The base 2.0L engine in the lower trims is nearly as efficient as the turbocharged powertrain, getting EPA-estimated ratings of up to 35 MPG combined.[b]

The Civic’s fuel economy rating is assisted by its three selectable drive modes. Econ Mode taxes your engine a bit less, letting you get a bit more bang for your buck. On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for more aggressive driving, you can put the engine into Sport mode. By allowing you control over the driving mode, you can have your car perform at rates you’re comfortable with so that it’s never using more gas than you want it to. This level of control is yet another reason the Civic remains a practical choice for all types of drivers.

Technology

Enjoy the Ride

No car should be without a solid infotainment setup. When you’re going to take a long drive, you should know that your vehicle will be equipped with infotainment systems that will keep your mood light and assist with navigation. In the 2023 Civic, this starts with a standard seven-inch touchscreen. An even larger nine-inch display is available on the top Touring trim.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard in the 2023 Civic, so you can link the car's touchscreen with your phone. Whether it’s for chatting with a friend on the phone hands-free or listening to your favorite playlists as you travel across the greater Seattle area, both of these systems will help make your trip fly by. Plus, the touchscreen’s Smart Shortcuts design creates an intuitive interface to make managing your apps simple. Whether you’re changing tunes or adjusting your navigation app, the Civic’s touchscreen will make it a breeze.

Of course, if you’re going to be listening to music or a podcast, you want to know that your Civic’s sound system will be up to par. No need to worry on that front. The 2023 Civic is available with a 12-speaker Bose Premium Surround System. The Centerpoint surround-sound technology embedded in the speakers means your music will have immersive clarity. Even a live concert might not sound as good.

Driver-Assist

Honda Sensing

The 2023 Honda Civic’s advanced technology means you’re guaranteed to have the most up-to-date driver-assist features you could possibly want. No modern driver should be purchasing a new vehicle that is lacking in this department.

The available Blind Spot Information System is one of our favorite driver-assist features the Civic comes equipped with. This technology is intuitively designed to cover your blind spots and alert you to any cars or obstacles that are in your way should you decide to merge left or right. While you never want to rely solely on a safety system, this one is almost as good as having a co-pilot with you.

However, there are many more features in the Honda Sensing Suite. This suite features a standard Collision Mitigation Braking System, which alerts you to possible incoming frontal collisions and starts the braking process before your foot even hits the pedal. Similarly, the standard Road Departure Mitigation System lets you know when you’re veering out of your lane without signaling and will gently guide you back to safety.

Thinking of Everything

Most cars have a rearview camera that activates when you’re backing up. The Civic, though, has three. You can adjust which of the three views you want as you back up so that you can make sure your vehicle is completely in the clear. Too many rearview cameras give you just a narrow view. The Civic’s camera is practically cinematic.

If there have been any break-ins in your neighborhood, then you’ll be happy to learn the Civic has an Auto Lock feature. This means that the car automatically locks as you walk away from it, so you’ll never need to start questioning if you forgot to lock your Civic. When you return, as long as you have the key fob on you, you can just pull the door handle open. This handy feature is included standard on all but the base LX trim of the 2023 Civic.
